【あれから50年❗️㊗️米国建国250年❗️】

1976年7月4日、私は米国カリフォルニア州サンノゼ市に暮らしていました。昼間はSan Jose City Collageに通い、夜は同じ市内にある和食レストランMinato-Sushiでバイトをしていました。

街はバイセンテニアル(建国200年)で沸いていました。1ドルと25セントの記念硬貨が普通にお釣りでもらえました。

記念硬貨はいつか値が上がるだろうととっていましたが、とにかく極貧だった為、大学の駐車場代(1回25セント)が払えず、泣く泣く記念硬貨を使ってしまいました。

住んでいたのはワンルームのアパートで、スリランカからの留学生Antony Pleraとシェアしていました。家賃も払えなかった時、Antonyは「ヒデの持っているカメラでいいよ」とアサヒペンタックスを引き取ってくれました。

日本に帰る時はお互い号泣して抱き合った日から、もう50年も経ったとは、時の流れの速さに驚いています。

Antonyは「スリランカの大統領になる！」と語っていたので、スリランカの大統領を気にして見ていますがらいまだに就任されていないようです。あの人懐っこい目が忘れられないです。

様々な経験をさせてくれたアメリカ。貧乏留学生を温かく迎えてくれた人々。その全てが私の原動力になっています。

【50 Years Since Then — Congratulations on America's 250th Anniversary! 🇺🇸🎉】

On July 4, 1976, I was living in San Jose, California. During the day, I attended San Jose City College, and in the evenings I worked part-time at a Japanese restaurant called Minato Sushi in the same city.

The entire country was celebrating the Bicentennial, the 200th anniversary of the founding of the United States. Commemorative $1 and 25-cent coins were so common that you even received them as change.

I kept those special coins, convinced that one day they would become valuable. But I was living in extreme poverty. I couldn't even afford the 25-cent parking fee at my college, so with great reluctance I ended up spending my commemorative quarters.

I lived in a small one-room apartment, sharing it with a Sri Lankan exchange student named Antony Plera. There was a time when I couldn't even pay my share of the rent. Antony kindly said, "Hide, your camera will do," and accepted my Asahi Pentax camera instead.

When I returned to Japan, we embraced each other in tears. I can hardly believe that 50 years have passed since that emotional farewell. Time truly flies.

Antony often said, "I'm going to become the President of Sri Lanka!" Ever since then, I've kept an eye on who serves as Sri Lanka's president, but it seems he has yet to achieve that dream. I still remember his warm, friendly eyes.

America gave me countless unforgettable experiences. The kindness shown by the people who welcomed a poor international student has stayed with me throughout my life. Every one of those experiences has become a source of strength and inspiration.
