Now I will talk about general information of Matsue-city.
Matsue is the capital city of Shimane Prefecture, located in the Chūgoku region of Honshu Island. Also, Matsue is the center of the Lake Shinji-Nakaumi metropolitan area that includes Izumo-city, Matsue-city, and Yonago city.
The population of Matsue city is around 200,000.
Matsue has a humid subtropical climate with very warm summers and cool winters. Precipitation is abundant throughout the year, and is somewhat heavier in July that is Japanese rainy season. Historically, there have been few big natural disasters such as earthquakes and Typhoons in Izumo region including Matsue, and some people think deities of Izumo are protecting this region from the natural disasters.
The original city of Matsue was founded on April 1, 1889.
Later, city of Matsue absorbed the towns of Kashima, Mihonoseki, Shimane, Shinji, Tamayu and Yatsuka, and the village of Yakumo, all from Yatsuka District, to create the new and expanded city of Matsue on March 31, 2005.
On August 1, 2011, the town of Higashiizumo was finally merged into Matsue and made the current city of Matsue.
Matsue is known as the "water city” because it is located between Lake Shinji and Nakaumi lake on the banks of the Ohashi River and there are also canals in the town.
Matsue is a castle town and Matsue castle is one of the twelve remaining original castles in Japan.
Matsue is famous for its beautiful sunsets over Lake Shinji, Matsue is also famous for having been the adopted home of the writer Lafcadio Hearn, one of the first Westerners to take Japanese citizenship under the name of Koizumi Yakumo.
He introduced much unknown Japan to the western world from the late 19 Century to the early 20 Century.
Because of the existence of Koizumi Yakumo, this city was designated as an International City of Culture and Tourism in 1955, Matsue offers great sightseeing opportunities and welcomes international tourists.
Although in the past, Matsue was the center of water transportation and a lot of wholesale stores were concentrated in Matsue, but after 1960’s, a revolution of the distribution system took place in nationwide, and most of the wholesale stores were already lost.
Currently Matsue is a tourist city, and a city with a lot of branch offices because it is the prefectural capital city.
In Matsue about 30% of the population is over 65 years old.
Compared to the city region, the population of young people is small, so the unemployment rate is lower than city area.
I hope a lot of young people will keep staying in their hometown instead of going to big cities.
